Thonet
The 214 Bentwood Chair was designed by Michael Thonet and is a true, pioneering, piece of furniture design - also known as Vienna Cafe Chair No 14 or the Bistro Chair. Between 1830 and 1836, Michael Thonet invented what is now known as Bentwood furniture. This technique enabled serial production of furniture for the first time and, with 50 million pieces sold until 1930 alone, the 214 Bentwood Chair is considered to be the most successful industrial product of the 19th Century. The classic bentwood range is still produced by Thonet today and is available to order in a number of different finishes and styles.
