New Makers: Annadale Brickworks

Established by craftsman, Clive Fiddis, Annadale Brickworks is a ceramics studio set within the urban fabric of Belfast. With two floors, a kiln room and an open plan flexible space with natural sunlight and views of the inner city terraces above, it will come as no surprise that Clive finds himself inspired by the urban architecture and city hustle and bustle around him. Although he very much considers himself an urban potter, Clive’s studio is very peaceful and private, an attribute he considers conducive to his work.

Making in batches using handmade tools, Clive enjoys the rhythm of throwing, glazing and firing.

He throws most of his pots on the wheel using a simple stoneware clay, after which the pots are dried slowly, bases turned, handles attached and finished before firing. Then the pots are fired twice, glaze fired in a gas kiln at stoneware temperatures. Prior to setting up Annadale Brickworks in Belfast, Clive resided in both Ireland and Finland for 30 odd years, teaching and making ceramics. He considers ceramic making a way of life that has allowed him to work and travel cohesively, drawing inspiration along the way in the likes of Japan, Egypt, Iran and Spain.

We are delighted to now stock a range of Annadale Brickworks’ mugs, bowls and dishes in store only. Pop in Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 - 17:00 to check out the full collection.
