Focus on: L.Ercolani

Ercol was founded in in 1920 by the young Italian immigrant Lucian Ercolani in High Wycombe, which was then the centre of English furniture making.  The designer successfully industrialised the production of the Windsor chair, displaying a level of mechanical precision and ingenuity that was unheard of at that time.  This innovation, the clean design and a need to rebuild post-war Britain propelled the company to huge success in the late 1940s.

The company remains family owned, with Lucian’s great grandson Henry Tadros the current Chairman. Sister brand L.Ercolani launched in 2020, draws on 100 years of craftsmanship and collaboration.  L.Ercolani is now the home for Ercol’s iconic pieces such as the Butterfly chair and the Loveseat as well as a range of new collections designed in collaboration with British and international designers like Norm Architects, Jonas Wagnell , Matthew Hilton and Tomoko Azumi.

Each product is made in the Buckinghamshire factory and Lucian’s model of combining traditional furniture-making techniques – wedge and tenon joints, steam bending, dovetail joints – with mass-produced components is still at the heart of its manufacturing, carried out by a team of skilled makers, some of whom have worked there for 30 or 40 years.
